The coin features the winged Goddess of Freedom, which symbolizes liberation from Spanish colonial rule. The goddess is located on a column, while the background (with numerous details) shows the mountainous landscape. The obverse of the coin shows the Mexican Coat of Arms, an eagle holding a snake in its beak. According to legend, the Aztecs (living in Mexico before the 16th century) saw an eagle holding a rattlesnake in its claws, and this is where they decided to establish the capital.
